JOB APPLICATION FOLLOW-UP TIMELINE

Know when to follow up after a job application.

Use this practical timeline and email template to stay visible without feeling pushy. Save this page or copy the template into your job-search tracker.

The simple follow-up rule

If the employer did not provide a different timeline, send one concise follow-up five to seven business days after you apply. If they gave a closing date, wait until after that date unless they invited earlier questions.

DAY 0

Apply and record it

Note the job title, company, date, contact name, and a one-line reminder of why the role fits you.

DAYS 1 TO 4

Do not follow up yet

Use this time to prepare for an interview, refine your next applications, and connect with relevant people thoughtfully.

DAYS 5 TO 7

Send one clear follow-up

Confirm your interest, mention the position, and add one brief detail about the value you could bring.

7 DAYS LATER

Send one final check-in

If there is still no response, send one last short note. Then move the application to "waiting" and continue your search.

Make it yours: Replace the bracketed sections with specific details. A short, relevant note is stronger than a longer generic message.
